Back to the nest…
September 30, 2010

Been absent from here for a while.

In addition to this blog, I have two others, am on a couple of forums, and have a page on Facebook. I don’t say much on any of them. Hell, on one of the forums, I’ve been a member nearly five years, and have posted ~115 times. Why? For one thing, I try to live by the little pearl of wisdom “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything”. Yeah, this does mean that I have many not-nice thoughts, and sometimes I would just love to rant at a post or thread topic somewhere, but I never do. For another, people who know me in real life are present on all but one site, and I censor myself constantly.

So while I started this blog as a creative exercise, it’s going to be a place for me to rant, rave, vent and just clear my mind. It’s not going to be linked to anything else of mine, I’m not telling any of my RL or ‘net friends about it. It’s for me.

Of the 7 1/2 Habits, I have to admit that most of them are difficult for me. I love to learn and I’m inherently curious – but I also tend to jump from one thing to another without ever really finishing. Probably the hardest habit is #4: if I don’t understand something and can’t figure it out, I automatically assume that I’m simply not smart enough to ‘get’ it. I see that other people ‘get’ it and wonder what they’re seeing or doing that I’m not, and I get more and more frustrated. So learning to have faith in my abilities might not come easily.

I do know how I learn best, though.  I can be lectured for days on end, watch a process or read a hundred books on it, but none of those methods will ever teach me as much as actually trying it for myself. I recently asked my father to help me learn to sand down and refinish an old chair. I watched him sand a small patch, then continued the process myself. We did the same thing for applying the finish. He occasionally made suggestions or comments, and I felt free to ask questions. In the end, we were both happy with the job I’d done. I don’t know which habit this would fall into – #5?

So, new blog with which to document learning more about the web and all the fabulous things to be done.

First order of business: figure out what on earth a ‘widget’ is.
